Throughout my life, I have developed my ability to lead and contribute to a group to achieve success. From the beginning of high school, I have been in a leadership role with increasing responsibilities each year. During my Freshman year, I joined the freshman football team, and with this being only the second season playing, I attained the role as quarterback. Still learning the game, I adapted and learned the subtle nuances of this position while also leading the team to a successful season. The next year, I became the class secretary and helped contribute to the class while also pointing incoming Freshmen and new students in the right direction. As track season approached, I found myself on both the 1600- and 3200-meter relay team as well as competing in the 400-meter dash. During the Conference meet, the team defeated our competitors in the 3200-meter relay with an extremely close finish and we collectively defended our streak of winning conference for the fifth year straight. Progressing to my Junior year, I served as class secretary again where I planned prom and graduation and assisted my fellow classmates. This same year, my cross country/track coach, a man whom I held in high regard, unexpectedly passed away. In hard times such as this, the track team needed someone to step up and lead with support to persevere and for focus on the upcoming track season. I assumed that role and helped pull my team back together, leading the team all the way to Regionals. Now in my Senior year, I take pride in representing my school and class as a leader of several clubs and sports as well as being a class officer. I serve as Captain of a young cross country team, teaching them that dedication is one the keys to success and, more importantly, that to attain success one must rise each time he or she falls. I rally the student section at sporting events, help incoming Freshman acclimate to high school and “Dare to be a Dragon,” and support the goals of the Senior class as the class secretary. I am currently in the throes of leading the track team as we set the goal of breaking three school records and competing at State. Each role has taught me to lead by example, to strive for success as a team, and to face adversity head on.
