Personal Statement
Personal statement - Freddie Owsley
My major achievements so far have been in sports, and I was awarded a school sports scholarship. I have reached a high level in all sports I have pursued, and an elite level on the track, and I am familiar with the time, dedication and hard work that goes into sporting performance. Therefore I feel it logical I should consider further education and career opportunities in the sporting arena, and I want to learn more about the different issues associated with sport.
Studying A-level PE, I have realised I want to combine my passion for sport, with a career. I am interested in how the body can perform at peak - faster, higher, stronger. I also believe sports can help anyone with life skills such as maintaining general health and fitness, teamwork, and dealing with success and failure. Studying PE has helped my understanding of physiology, but competition has made me realise the mental side of sport is just as important, and I would like to understand this further. Studying sports, I am hoping to build skills such as writing, researching and analysing data, and presenting evidence, all transferable to any career.
My English studies support these skills also. I am hoping to combine my Englis, Business and PE studies with my love of sport and find opportunities in an area such as sports sponsorship, marketing, promotion or management. My studies have introduced me to how sports is organised in the UK and internationally. I'm more aware of how sport has a place in society, and this is something I'd like to study more. I took only three AS Levels because of the time commitments I make for sports and training. My marks of BBC were very close to being ABB.
My main sports are rugby and athletics. On the track I recently represented Great Britain at 200m in an U20 international in Germany, and am the 400m U20 British Championship 2015. I made it to the Final of the Senior British Championships in July 2015 having already come 4th in the indoor Senior British Championships in February 2015. I will be aiming to represent GB at the European Junior Championships and on current form I expect to make the team. I also qualify for Scotland through ancestry and am the leading 400m runner at Under 20 and on time would have made the senior squad for the recent Commonwealth Games.
In rugby union, I am in the Bristol RFC Academy squad and Gloucestershire Schools U18s. I have also been invited to be part of the Scottish representative development programme. My ultimate sporting objective is to make a national team either at 400m or rugby sevens at a major championships such as the Commonwealth Games or Olympics.
In other sports, I was part of Bristol City FC age group development squads and played school hockey to regional level. Outside of sport, music is my main interest, and I enjoy listening to many styles and finding out about different music cultures. I play drums competently enough to play in a band and have taken lessons for a number of years.
My sports commitments mean that if I want to earn from a part-time job, it has to be where employers are happy to hire me on an occasional basis. I have been fortunate in finding regular work with a small chain of local gastro pubs, both as a kitchen porter and helping with their marketing. I also work as a labourer in summer, for a company involved in property developments. Although hard work, I find all these jobs interesting in what they are able to teach me about how small businesses operate, and issues such as financing and marketing.
