Personal Statement
UPDATE:
I have been accepted through ED and committed to continue my academic and athletic pursuits at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton, starting in the fall of 2020. Thank you to all those that have contributed to my decision but also thank you to the coaches who reached out to me and for your interest in me as a student athlete. Oliver Stewart
I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I attend Bishops Diocesan College (www.bishops.org.za) and I am completing my senior year.
I have a strong academic record having consistently achieved an A aggregate (4.0 GPA) and achieved a SAT score of 1450 in May 2019.
I have played a number of different sports at Provincial and at National level, including swimming, biathlon (swim/run) and waterpolo. In 2017 I started to focus purely on track and cross country.
Cross country has been my primary discipline. I am the Provincial Champion (US State equivalent) winning in my age group for the last 7 consecutive years. At a National level I have consistently finished in the top 10 at the South African National XC Champs. My best place finishes were 1st in 2014, 3rd in 2015, 6th in 2018.
I had a successful 2019 Cross Country season and finished 5th at the South African Schools National XC Championships on 21 September 2019 (8km). My fastest 8k Cross Country this season was 24:33, run in Cape Town in July.
My cross country ability is translating well on the track. I have good range accross the middle to long distances. I have PR’s of 3:58 for 1500m and although I have run very few races over these distances, a 8:40 3000m , a 15:21 5000m and a 9:31 for 3000m Steeple Chase earlier this year.
On 13 October 2019 I set a new 10k Road PR of 30'45 at the FNB DURBAN 10k, a IAAF Bronze Label race. This was a 8 second improvement on my previous best of 30:53 run in June this year.
When I am not running I enjoy spending time with family & friends, reading, fly fishing and I love to go snow skiing.
I am excited about being part of a US College team and believe I will thrive in this environment, training and studying with other like minded athletes. My goal is simply to try and reach my full potential as a student athlete at a top academic College.
