Personal Statement
Having been in Hillcrest, a truly internationally diverse school and a school that requires you to participate in many different activities from music to drama to sport, from kindergarten all though to A levels, I grew to become very social and interactive as I encountered more international students and also a broad-minded from being involved in many different areas of the school which we’re drama, sports, music and art. Due my growth in social skills and a wider perspective of thinking I began to take interest in social sciences such as psychology and human geography.
Having a growing interest in social sciences has encouraged me to pursue a career that involves a lot of human interaction, a philosophical view and conflict solving and living in Kenya where we do face corruption, a government that has a single minded approach to solving problems and development and a country where we have face severe conflict before with the 2007-08 post election violence, I became very interested in politics, political issues and human rights a topic which a covered in my AS level global perspectives essay.
My interests in social sciences has also grown from my experiences i’ve had in sport. In swimming where I have swam and National level and achieved bronze I had to be a part of a team where i only knew one person the Metropolitan team then went on to win Nationals for swimming with the relay team that i was part of achieving bronze, in hockey where I captained my school team to Provisional gold and Regional silver and being an international school playing against government schools we faced a lot of discrimination and unfairness not only from the other schools but from the referees as well, so dealing with it and getting the team to look past it and go on to win has been a great experience in social conflict and problem solving.
Having developed a broad-minded approach, I became very proactive trying out many things by the time I was in year 11 I had not only taken part in every sports team but also captained every sport team from hockey, rugby, football, athletics, cross-country, cricket and basketball and been victorious winning the league every sport apart from cricket at least once. It is after year 11 where I was approached to take up modern pentathlon and I optimistically jumped into it and a few months later I became Kenya’s first male modern pentathlete representing Kenya in the world championships in Georgia. It was in Georgia where I again got to broaden my social skills and views as most people in the country and at the competition didn't speak that much english and were from different cultures. I managed to make multiple friends and ever learn a small bit of multiple languages to add to the spanish and french that I can speak and I believe languages are very important in international relations and politics.
Alongside my sports and A levels, work experience also played a major part in helping me clear the path on what I want to do in the future. I managed spend some time with a physiotherapist and injury consultant. This enabled me to see how it is to work with others who are in pain or are facing a challenge and in the case of sportsmen the challenge was an injury in their career. At the end of week I felt I left with refined idea of what it takes to guid someone who is in destress or pain to health and I picked up a few tips myself.
In order to improve my leadership, problem solving and interactive skills I joined the charity club at Hillcrest and I later on became vice president, I joined the Ecobus club which is a club that runs a tuck shop in the school and I ended up being chosen as an executive member and I also was then appointed a prefect. My time in these positions has actually been like work experience for me for I have had to deal with multiple social issues, conflicts and also had to be a guide to those younger than me.
Further more in recognition to my overall effort in academics and extracurricular activities I was awarded the head of year prize in year 9, I have also been given house colours for hockey. I have taken part in four school drama productions, I took part of the orchestra playing trumpet in which I am ABRSM grade 5 for but I am also grade 2 piano and grade 5 music theory and I later on started a band. And all these I believe have helped shape me who I am.
