My name is Charles Albertson, but I prefer to be called Billy. I’m from a small town in Maine. I began competing in the USATF Youth Summer Program when I was in fifth grade. I began doing running events since our two coaches specialized in running and throwing events.
Once I reached middle school, the coach kept me doing sprints, but I was interested in learning how to long jump. I started watching videos, etc. on the long jump. I started practicing and competing in the event during the USATF summer series.
Due to Covid-19, we didn’t have a spring track season during my 8th grade year or USATF summer series. That didn’t stop me from practicing. I’d go to the track to practice my sprints and jumps. I was determined to get better.
My freshman year of high school was the first year I had a coach to work with me on the long jump. I improved and learned a lot. It wasn’t until the end of the season when I tried the triple jump and have done it since.
I’ve had the opportunity to travel around New England, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey and New York competing in AAU and USATF events.
I’m excited to advance my running and jumping skills at a collegiate level. I’m self-motivated, set personal goals, take advice and criticism well. I want to be the best I can be in my events, so I need the right coach and school to help me achieve this.
I’m looking for a college or university to further my education in engineering and to fulfill my love for track and field. There are a lot of great schools with excellent engineering programs, but I also want a school with a great track program as well.
