My name is Trey Welch and I am a upcoming senior at Plymouth High School in Canton, MI. My dream is to compete as a pole vaulter on a college team. I have been participating in pole vault since April of 2018. For ten years leading up to pole vault, I was a club gymnast. I competed at local, state, and regional levels and won many awards. The highlight of my gymnastics career was placing 12th at the five state level ten regional competition. After this competition, I tried learning pole vault for my high school track team and fell in love with the sport. I decided to retire from gymnastics and concentrate my efforts on pole vault. I joined a vault club in the summer of 2018 and continued participating with the club for indoor seasons in 2018-2019, and 2019-2020. I am currently training with my vault club and I am also doing strength and conditioning training. So far the highlight of my outdoor pole vaulting experience was participating in the 2019 Michigan Division 1 State Meet. This past indoor season I hit a new PR of 13'9" and placed 9th at the indoor state finals. Although my outdoor season was cancelled due to COVID, I have continued training throughout the summer of 2020 and recently set an outdoor PR of 14'2". My next goal is set a new school record and to be in the top ten at next year's state meet.
In addition to my athletic performance, I take great pride in my academic performance and extra-curricular activities. I have consistently achieved the honor roll at my school and I currently hold a 3.7 GPA. I have chosen to take honors and AP level courses to push myself academically. I am also a section leader of the percussion section in my high school band and I am very active in my local church youth group.
I am seeking to be a part of college experience that will challenge me both athletically and academically. I want to continue achieving new heights in pole vault as part of team that works together to bring out the best in each other. I want to graduate from a university that will help launch my professional career. I am still researching fields of study but probably considering something related to business. I want to be sure that wherever I attend that my time there will be the most important part of my future success.
Lastly, I want coaches to know that I am the kind of athlete that they want on their team. I am an honest, hard-working, and caring student. I come to practices ready work and give one hundred percent every day. Performance is important to me but character is even more important. I choose to be a leader in school, in my church and also on the field. I encourage my teammates and I try to learn from others. I know that the only way to achieve more is to always be learning and seeking help from coaches and mentors.
I am very excited about the what the future holds and where this dream will take me.
