Over the last several years my experience as a pole vaulter has taught me that success requires patience, humility and perseverance.
My freshman year I just missed going to the state track meet but jumped qualifying height at the meet immediately after the regional meet that same season. My sophomore year I missed a jump much lower than expected and so missed recognition as an all state athlete. Finally, this most recent season (junior year) I won the state meet. When I was younger, I was always the small, weak kid so coming from that perspective I wasn't sure if I would ever be able to compete in college. Winning my event at the state track meet taught me that listening to my coach was the key to success in an event such as pole vault where technique is so important. When I finally started listening and focusing on all the details and breaking down the mechanics of the jump repeatedly in practice I was able to diagnose what I needed to change and it helped me in times when I was not clearing a height and to figure out what is going wrong with my jumps.
I have been fortunate to receive direction and excellent coaching from coaches who's programs allow me to to learn and grow as an athlete. Hillsdale Academy is a unique kind of school with exceptional teachers and coaches who are experts and who really care about their student athletes. In recent years, I have learned to treat the track as a classroom and try to learn as much as I can everyday. With my experience as a three sport athlete (soccer, basketball and track) while serving as team captains in all three sports and receiving all state recognition in two sports, I am confident I can be major contributor to your field events team. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you and your track & field team but also hope to be considered for membership on the team. I feel I will be able to contribute in several ways, to serve as a leader, and as I become an upper classman, help as a teacher of younger teammates our track & field team.
