I became interested in Track and Field my freshman year, after my friends encouraged me to join with them. I originally wanted to do it just for fun, but after the season ended without being one of the best kids on the track. I realized that it was something that I wanted to take seriously and be a part of in the future. However, the pandemic hit and, like everyone else, it knocked out my whole Sophomore outdoor season. I decided that I wanted to use that opportunity to train so that during the next season I would make a difference not only for my team, but also for myself.
This experience paid off and helped me grow as an athlete and a teammate. I learned that I am not only very driven to achieve my goals, but I also proved to myself that I am capable of things that I might not ever thought were possible. I also learned that good teammates both encourage and compete with each other to help you become a better athlete. It was important to have someone to train with outside of school while sports were suspended. I was fortunate enough to get part of a season back, and I decided to pick up new events. One of them, triple jump, brought me all the way to the NJ Group Championship meet after having only competed in the event 4 times.
I learned that commitment, determination, trust and accountability are the necessities to succeed in what you want. Individual commitment and determination to do the work required, trust in your coaches’ wisdom and experience to teach and guide you, and accountability for your own results. I believe these traits and my capabilities will make me a well-rounded member of your college team.
