My name is Joe Bumpus, and I'm currently a junior at Bloomfield High School in New Jersey. Since I was young, leadership has come naturally in nearly all settings. In the classroom, I set an example with consistent attendance and punctuality, as well as doing my work diligently and with my full effort. As I use my energy to study and apply myself to any and all work that is put in front of me, the rewards have been plentiful in my grades and in recognition. I pride myself in being an example of the phrase “hard work pays off.” However, it is not in the rewards or in the praise that I choose to serve as an example. I am at all times willing to contribute to the class, participating in discussion and asking questions.
Leadership is something that transcends the classroom for me, though, as I am privileged to be in multiple leadership positions in several sports and at my church. As a junior, my coaches for winter track and spring track chose me as an athlete who demonstrated the qualities necessary to be trusted to lead others by example and by instruction. This is an incredible honor, as the position of captain in any sport is most often reserved for seniors. I have also been chosen as a captain for the upcoming 2017 football season, and I am already entrusted in leading in preseason weightlifting as well as organizing camp visits and service events within the team. I attribute these positions to my raw work ethic and strong self motivation - traits that have taken me far in all of my sports. I am thankful for each of those positions with which I am entrusted.
