My name is Danny Torres and I am 16 years old. I just completed my junior year at Washington Township High School in Sewell, New Jersey. I have played soccer since I was 5 years old. I started on my high school soccer team while in 9th, 10th and 11th grade. I also started on my club team in the Elite Development Program (EDP) Monroe United. My position was center defensive midfielder.
In March 2023, as a junior, I decided to join my high school spring Track & Field team. This was my first year running track. I was quickly identified as a mid-distance runner. Throughout the season, I mostly competed in the 4x800m relay and the 1600m. For my first time running the 1600m in competition, my time was 4:34. This was the fastest "debut" mile in my high school's history, according to my coach who has been coaching for 30+ years. In addition, I received the Newcomer of the Year Award at my Group IV high school (due to my times and being new to the sport). The video which I posted is the third time I have run the 1600m (4:31) in competition. Please watch until the end! These times are as a result of training for track for only 2 months. My 4x800m split time is 2:01. With training and experience, I fully anticipate these times to improve dramatically.
I made the decision to retire my soccer cleats and focus solely on track. This coming fall (my senior year), I will not be playing soccer on the high school team. Instead, I have dedicated myself to run cross country in order to achieve my goal of significantly dropping my 800m and 1600m times in the spring. I have been competitive running since March 2023, and I have competed in Sectionals, States, NJ Meet of Champions and Penn Relays. Running has become my passion. I am determined, focused, and confident that the track is where I belong. I am excited to see what this year will bring.
Some interesting facts about me are that I enjoy playing the guitar, riding my bike and spending time with my family. Through my years of being a competitive athlete, I have gained many skills and attributes both on and off the field/track. Being part of an athletic team has taught me to how to persevere, maintain disciple, gain leadership and most of all apply teamwork. My goals for the future consist of finding a college that fits me academically and athletically. In a college, I want to be able to experience a higher competitive atmosphere to allow me to grow as a runner and a student. I look forward to visiting different schools and communicating with coaches to find the best fit for me.
