I want to continue running in college because I want to become the best athlete I can be. Throughout my four years of running on the cross country team, I have witnessed the outcomes of nonstop hard work and determination, not only in other runners but also in myself, and how well I can improve over a short period of time. Within a two years difference I have been able to drop more than five minutes off of my 5k time, and I can only imagine how much more I can improve if I have the opportunity to run in college.
I have a history of strong academic classes. I have taken all honors and AP classes in high school, and I have seen the pressures and struggles that come along with taking these classes. Because I have taken many of these classes, I have experience and knowledge on how to manage stress from difficult academic classes, and how to think critically and analytically in stressful situations. I have had similar experiences in cross country, where the pressure was put onto me to perform well to help my team win, and to deal with my teammates who are not as enthusiastic about running as I am. When teammates try to convince me that going through all of that hard work is not worth it, I stay focused and keep training because I know the outcome of hard training is worth it all in the end. When there is pressure on me to place high for the team, I do not let anything else distract me or make me nervous, I stay focused on what I have to do and execute it.
If I receive the opportunity to run for a college team, my greatest ambition is to contribute to the scoring for the team and place high at meets. Although it would be nice to break my personal bests in college, I feel a greater sense of accomplishment knowing I had a part in the winning of my team. I also feel more accomplished when I place higher amongst my competitors at big meets because it not only helps my team score higher, but it gives me this idea that I am stronger than other runners and do have the capability to beat the majority of my competition.
