Personal Statement

I picked the game up on the beaches of Hawaii during the summer 6th grade, before heading into Junior High for my first year of playing the sport on a team. Both of my older brothers played the game, and I was often going to watch their games at 6 years old.

Since I started learning I've developed a passion for the game that is unstoppable. I first played club during my 8th grade year, where I made Canucks, an elite club in Canada. I was playing with people who often had me beat by 2-3 years in experience, and by the end of the year I had worked hard enough to bring my skill level up to theirs. Four years later and if anything, my passion for the game and desire to improve has only gotten stronger. I average around 12 hours of straight court time training per week, and 4-6 hours in the gym, depending on whether it's a tournament weekend or not. The only obstacle in my life preventing me from training more is my school work, and working to maintain and increase my marks.

This year I'm playing in Edmonton, committing to making the three and a half hour drive to make it to every practice, and work with some of the top athletes in the province.

Looking forward past my 18U year, I would like to give myself the best possible opportunity to train, and continue to get better at the game I love, with the ultimate goal and aspiration to make Team Canada, and represent Canada in the Olympics. This lofty goal I have held front and center in my mind since my 14U year, and is a major driving force to putting in that extra effort at every possible stage of my game.

Training

  • Volleyball Canada Centre for Excellence
  • 2 years
  • Twice a week in the mornings from 6:00 to 8:00 before school, university and national team coaches work with an elite group of athletes who are scouted during the club season are asked to tryout for the training. It is not a team, but a program dedicated to getting Canadian volleyball players an additional 100 hours a year of training, to try and increase the level of Canadian volleyball to that of one which can compete with countries across the globe.
  • Precision Academy
  • 3 years
  • Ex-Olympian Rod Walsh holds setting clinics which run once a week during school season, and twice to three times a week during the club season. His clinics focus on setting and libero positions, and have had a huge positive impact on my current level of play.
  • Team Alberta Indoor
  • 2 years
  • Team Alberta holds selection camps throughout the club season to select athletes for the Team Alberta program over the summer. During my 15U year I was in one of the Calgary selection camps, and during 16U I was invited to the Team Alberta Training program over the summer.
  • Team Alberta Beach
  • 2 years
  • In a much similar fashion to Team Alberta Indoor, the beach program in Alberta holds selection and training camps throughout the beach season. In my 15U year I attended one of the selection camps, and in my 16U year I attended the camps, and was further invited to the Team Alberta Beach program, where I and my partner went on to represent Alberta at Canadian Beach Nationals in August of 2013.
