Playing for Steele Canyon High School Freshman volleyball team in the fall of 2012 made me realize that I had found my niche in sports. It was the first time I played volleyball and I fell in love with it. I knew then that volleyball was something I wanted to pursue passionately. As athletes we strive to better ourselves physically and mentally. The team plays provide the individual opportunities resulting in a victory was just awesome. Honing my skills as a freshman setter opened the door to be the starter on the Varsity Team both as a sophomore and a junior. Fall 2014 was the pinnacle as the Varsity starting setter when Steele Canyon High School won the Grossmont Hills League Championship for the first time and I was selected as the 2nd Team All star setter.
When I think about my future, I realize that my God given talents and abilities are great assets complimenting my super contagious positive attitude in achieving my educational goals, paving the road to a successful future. helping my family and contributing to my community. I know sports is the door and volleyball is the key to a very challenging and successful college future for me.
With volleyball being a team sport, it showed me that leadership, commitment, sacrifice and great coaching are the building blocks and the strong foundation behind any successful program. Having learned this, I know I can bring these qualities to any College program and be successful in it. I can rise to the challenge. It's easy to ride the high waves after each victory but I learned that the biggest test of one's character comes in the humbling experience of a loss. I motivate others to see the loss as the key to our next victory. I have learned to be humble in victory and be gracious in defeat.
Every athlete are unique individuals with special talents and drive defining their character. My greatest assets are my exceptional positive personality and attitude that motivates others to be better. My wonderful parents instilled this in me coming from a different culture and struggling through life but they always tell me, "look for the sunrise tomorrow because it will be a better day". I see life as a wealth of opportunities and a better world because I make can a difference. Secondly, my winning approach to any situation or challenges allows me to see solutions instead of problems, victories instead of defeats, opportunities instead of road blocks. I am a winner even when you lose(loosing never sits well with one's guts but it helps puts things back in perspective and raises one's intensity to the next level). Thirdly, I work hard, I train hard, and I strive to honor my God given abilities with the help of my Family, Pastor, Teachers,Coaches, Teammates and Friends. I have learned that I am not a tree on an island but an island with lots of trees- we are co-dependent, we nourish each other, we grow together and we look good together. We soak in the cool blessings of fresh morning dew each new day and we also brave the harsh elements of life together. Win or lose, we are a Team. I feel, having a very talented student athlete that is Available, that is Willing to do whatever it takes(ethically and morally) to win, that is Teachable and is totally committed to succeed in academics and sports is a must asset to any successful College volleyball program.
I am that Student Athlete.
Talents and ability alone is not enough. It takes excellent teachers to succeed academically and great Coaches with a great volleyball program to develop talented athletes to be successful. I view myself as a person who enjoys learning. I especially love the pride that comes from putting that knowledge into play and seeing it happen.
I've found that the volleyball court is the arena where I can exhibit some of my classroom learned skills in team work, tenacity and character. Complete analysis, careful planning and perfect execution proved valuable tools complimenting my athletic abilities. Understanding volleyball not only as a very technical but also as a very tactical sport was easier to see when I applied my academic knowledge to my training.
I am interested in engineering because I want to know how things work and I want to make them work better. My interest in an engineering degree is so I can learn engineering principles and apply them in the work place to improve and develop new ideas.
In summary, the Three Pillars of my life are;
1) My faith and trust in God and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who gives me strength through the Holy Spirit who is the light unto my paths and the lamp unto my feet.
2) My Pastor, my Teachers, and my Coaches who are my wonderful counsellors, educators, mentors and great role models.
3) Last but not least are my great wonderful loving parents that are always there for me on this adventurous journey, my family who are my greatest supporters and critics, my friends whom we share these unforgettable moments, and my community who look to us as leaders for tomorrow.
Thank you
I am different from any other athlete because I know I am capable of more. My journey has only begun, but with the right College Volley-ball Program, great Coaching staff and excellent academic opportunities I am confident of a very bright and successful future.
