Personal Statement
My name is Steven R. Irvine Jr., or “Stewie” for short, as I’m known in school and among friends and fellow athletes. I started practicing volleyball in the summer before my freshman year of high school. I not only made the team at Naples Middle/High School in Italy but also achieved the Varsity Libero position. I have fallen in love with the sport ever since. I strive to be the best libero, working harder every day and spending hours studying my game videos to improve. I am a great listener who takes coaching advice very well and puts it straight into my technique to improve further. I’m also an excellent leader with many years of leadership experience. I strongly desire to continue playing volleyball after high school and at the Collegiate level. My dream goal is to play for my country on the National USA Olympic Team. Currently, my best fit is at the DII or DIII Collegiate level.
I’ve earned multiple sports awards, including being a two-time Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) All-Star Player and two-time All-Defensive Player for the Naples Middle/High School Varsity Men’s Volleyball team. During my freshman year, I was the only Freshman out of 12 DoDEA Europe teams selected for All-Stars. I was also selected by the European DoDEA coaches as an All-Tournament Player at the DoDEA European Championships, and my best achievement yet is being All-Europe 1st Team in DoDEA Europe. Not only do I excel in American Volleyball, but have played in the Italian Clubs for the past two years. My Current club is “Centro Volley Orta (CVO).” I play in the U16, U17, U18, and U19 Divisions and in the higher divisions of Serie D with Atellana Volley. As the primary libero for CVO, the U16 team won regional championships and competed in the Italian National Championships, where we won third place.
I am hardworking and have endless energy for volleyball and learning. I also have exceptional academics with a current GPA of 3.6/4.0, multiple AP classes, and a plan to pursue the medical field in nursing after high school. I am well-liked throughout school and my classmates and teachers speak highly of me. I was voted as the Homecoming Prince for both my Freshman and Sophomore years. One of my proudest extracurricular achievements outside of school is earning the Boy Scouts of America rank of “Eagle Scout” and being selected by my fellow Scouts as an Order of the Arrow (OA) Brotherhood Member, currently holding the position of OA Vice Chapter Chief of my chapter.
