My name is Iain McKellar, date of birth 06/02/1994 (mm/dd/yyyy), and I want to develop my volleyball skills to the highest level. I'm a left-handed player, 6'7" tall, 7"1 Armspan and weigh 190 lbs. I compete as a opposite and middle player in the UK for the England Junior National Volleyball team, Loughborough College and Newcastle Staffs Volleyball Club. I start for the leading Division 1 side in the National Volleyball League in England (Newcastle Staffs VC) and play for their Junior U18's team: we are U18 champions 2011 and runners up in 2012. As an England Junior I have competed in tournaments in Europe where our team has gained competitive experience.
I can confirm that I have retained my amateur status, as the National Volleyball League is not professional and I have received no payment for volleyball. I am looking at options for my future development and I have heard from players who have trained in the US that there are opportunities to excel at volleyball. I have been training for 4 hours a day for the past 18 months with an exceptional coach, Rogerio Ponticelli, in Loughborough, the 'home' of sport in England.
I am part of a pioneering group of young players in the UK at the National Volleyball Academy - we were the first group to join the Academy and commit to combining our training program with our academic studies. As a member of the National Volleyball Academy, I have lived away from home since the age of 16; this experience has given me the life skills and the confidence to live independently and, if I have the opportunity to play in the US, I know I would make the transition very quickly. I have great support from my parents (who both played and coached volleyball) and they have encouraged me to follow my ambition to play volleyball at the highest level possible.
I am currently studying A-Levels (Maths, Physics, Economics) in the UK and will complete my A-level exams in June 2012. My future studies at University are important to me because I realise my competitive volleyball career will not be forever. I am very interested in training, developing and playing competitively at University. I would like to learn more about how your training programme is broken down and what I could expect as an elite athlete at your University.
Please would you consider me for your student-athlete program. Thank you, Iain McKellar
