My name is Matthew Nelson; I am a 6’5” 190lb middle blocker/ outside hitter and I am willing and able to play any other position. I am a senior at John Curtis Christian School in New Orleans, LA. I began playing indoor volleyball the beginning of my junior year. We are the only team from Louisiana that competed in Nationals and last year was our first year with an 18’s club team. It is very hard to get recognized playing this sport in a state where boys' volleyball is so scarce. Even with these challenges, I have managed to excel in the sport of indoor volleyball. I tried out for HP in Dallas TX in March 2013 and was selected to attend the A3 camp in California. Unfortunately the camp never materialized with HP and I went to Stanford University in Stanford, CA for their camp. At the camp I competed in their elite bracket of play and the coaches were impressed by my skills even with my short time playing indoor. My volleyball IQ increased tremendously during the camp and I had the opportunity to increase my play in many ways playing with athletes on such a high skill level. I play volleyball 6-7 days a week, whether indoor or beach, and love the sport.
I will offer my college team: leadership, passion for the game, aggressiveness, a willingness to step up in key situations, high performance under pressure and a team spirit. I am teachable and willing to learn. I want to play volleyball my 4 years in college and will work hard to be the best player I am able to be.
I am interested in a degree in business as my family owns a local business and I believe what I learn in college will be an asset to the company. I work hard at school, am an A/B student, National Honor Society and an active member of the Interact Club. My teachers comment on my leadership skills and I work hard to do well in my studies.
I am looking forward to my college experience and I know I will be an asset to the college that I attend.
