As a kid I played as many sports as I could play in a year - basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, surfing, and when forced by my parents, golf. It was the summer after my freshman high school year I followed a few volleyball opportunities and before I knew it, I played a full year of volleyball! I practiced with my team and when there was a day off, I insisted on private lessons to get more reps. I could not wait for the next practice or the next tournament. After 10+ days of USA High Performance A-1 training and competition, I traveled home and wanted to play the next morning. It is my game. It is my fun. I like being known as a volleyball player.
I always intended to go to college. Volleyball makes that decision more exciting. It would be great honor to compete at the college level. I go to college matches and know I can make it to that court. I mostly learn about college programs from my club coach and older teammates that are now attending. I like colleges that have good training facilities and successful programs that draw fans to come watch. I want to go to a college where I can contribute to the team and earn a starting job in my college career, be successful.
I will be the hardest worker on the court. In eighth grade I attended a Steph Curry basketball camp. At the end, there were three awards given for over 250 campers. One award was the “Mr Hustle Award” and I was the recipient, hand-delivered at center court by Steph Curry himself. I learned that having a good attitude, to be in the moment every practice, being a good teammate and understanding my role on the court translates to wins. I like winning and take losses hard. I am working on the latter, but I like to load the W column. I am putting some of this into my school work this year, junior year. I know it is a defining year and I am improving my focus on the quality of my school work. My grades are decent. I am working on a step higher to make them impressive. So, like volleyball practice, I am putting in the extra time in school to get a step-up on others.
My ratings by coaches are consistently a 4 of 4 for coachability, team player, competitiveness, effectiveness and the next highest is leadership and communication. I am playing on the highest level 18’s team this year as the youngest player. I am starting at opposite. I am mostly learning to be a better all -around player and not just dependent on kills. My coach is focused on speed, passing, covering tips and slowing the attack. It is an exciting year as I am realizing more ways to be valuable to my team getting Ws!
