This past year, I realized how unexpected struggles in life can occur at any moment when my father suffered from a spinal cord injury that has prevented him from working, and has altered our family’s normal routines. Seeing my father in his current condition has inspired me to help others and to pursue studies in the medical field. Both of my parents are in medicine but from personal interest I am seeking to incorporate engineering into my studies as well. Even with this immense change over the past year, I stayed focused and committed to my academics and to water polo training. I try to remain positive and supportive of my team in every way, and challenge myself to be the best athlete and person I am capable of being.
Water polo has become one of my biggest personal focuses apart from academics, faith, and family; it continues to influence my daily activity and pushes me to become the best. I had a diverse athletic experience growing up playing baseball, basketball and soccer; however, I did not participate in any aquatic programs until my freshman year of high school when I joined the water polo team. My father had played water polo in high school and that influenced my decision to try out for the team. The coach was immediately excited about my potential due to my size and talent and highly recommended that I continue working on my water polo skills by joining a club team in the off season. Through training and competition, I learned the value of dedication and discipline, and developed an immense love of the sport. My experiences as a goalie provided me with opportunities to develop skills of positive and effective communication and become a leader in and out of the pool.
As I continue with high school, my main academic goals are to maintain good grades and to prepare for college studies in medicine and engineering. My athletic goal is simply to compete at the highest level. I look forward to putting my maximum effort into training and playing and bringing a positive and supportive attitude to the team.
