I began playing water polo in my first year of high school. I had no previous water polo experience and chose to play because of my affinity for water. In addition, I had a healing stress fracture that prohibited me from playing land sports. However, despite being completely new, I quickly fell in love with the sport. In Oregon, we don't have as big of a water polo following as there is in California, and our small team allowed me to get lots of game experience. I quickly improved. After my first water polo season and winning the 5A State Championship, I decided to join my high school swim team to improve my speed and conditioning. Here I improved my 50-yard freestyle time to 25.52 and placed 8th at the district meet.
Following swim season, I chose to play for the local club water polo team while also swimming for a club swim team. We played in many tournaments, and I got even more experience in the water. I became one of the leading figures on our 16U team and also played in our 18U games. By our next high school season, I had significantly improved compared to my first season.
I started for my high school team last year and typically played right wing. Our team was dominant in our league and placed third in the state 5A tournament. As a sophomore, I was awarded the second-team all-state. I also participated in high school and club swim teams during the winter while also spending substantial time in the weight room.
My grades after my first year of high school were lower than I would like, but I worked to bring my GPA up this year and I raised it up by a couple points. In addition, I am a grade level ahead in my science and math courses and next year I will be taking AP Composition, AP Chemistry, and Math 111 as well as beginning my 3rd year of foreign language. My Sophomore year I took AP World History and scored a 4 on the AP test. I plan to earn a Fisheries and Wildlife Management degree or something in a related field so I can pursue a career with Oregon's Department of Fish and Wildlife. I have been fascinated with animals, fishing, and rivers for my whole life, and I wish to pursue this field.
I have attended the KAP7 Camp in Santa Barbara, where Wolf Wigo and several UCSB college players coached me. In addition, I participated at the Oregon/Idaho/Washington USA Water Polo Olympic Development Camp this fall. Unfortunately, my club team has been unable to attend the Junior Olympics, but I was able to find a team from Puget Sound who was able to take me in and let me play with them at JO’s.
I am a leader on my team while remaining highly coachable. I have played sports my whole life, whether baseball, football, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, taekwondo, or swimming, and I bring this experience to water polo in numerous ways. I am willing to work hard, continue to develop my skills, and improve my knowledge of water polo. I am dedicated to improving myself, and I hope you will consider me a good fit for your program. It is my dream to play at the collegiate level.
