I hate to lose. I realize this is probably not the way most people would start their personal statement but I feel this best describes my attitude toward competition. I am the most competitive person I have ever met. I work very hard to develop skills and a level of physical conditioning so I can be a productive member of my team. If I fail to have a productive at bat or allow a runner to advance on a throw down I take that as an indication I need to get better. Don't get me wrong I realize that nobody bats 1.000 but going 0-4 is unacceptable to me. I feel the same way about my academic work.
I have always had to work very hard to make good grades but in my mind that makes getting an A on an exam much more satisfying. I have taken honors classes my entire high school career even though the guidance counselor discouraged me from doing so. The guidance counselor, with the best of intentions, suggested I take an easier road. This suggestion offended me but also made me determined to prove her wrong. I freely admit that I struggled with a few of the courses and perhaps I would have been an all A student in regular classes but where is the challenge in that.
