My name is Ava Fougere and I have been playing softball for over 8 years. I have been a middle infielder majority of my career, and been primarily and outfielder for the last 2 years. I am a multisport athlete as I have also played the sport of ringette (which is a very popular female sport played on ice (and similar to hockey) in Canada and Finland) over the same time period.
I am a firm believer that if you work hard, success will follow. To that end, I train with my school softball team 5 days a week through the school year from September through May, while also playing “A” level ringette where I practice and play 3 to 4 times per week, including multiple weekend tournaments, and on average 6 additional hours a week training with my club softball team. I have consistently shown strong commitment to all 3 of my teams and this has allowed me to develop my time management skills as I am committed to show up for every practice for each sport no matter how busy it may get, all the while keeping up good grades and attendance at school. I am devoted to my teammates and a hallmark of my character is that I always strive for success and never give up. In recognition of that, I have won multiple heart and hustle awards, and a most improved player awards on my club team.
I had the honor of playing in the Canadian U17 national championships where my club team was able to finish first in the relegation round, an accomplishment not previously achieved by our club team. I was the team’s lead-off hitter and one of the team leader’s in hits and runs batted in during the tournament. Being successful at such a high level gave me a lot of confidence and inspired me to continue to work hard.
After that experience, I enrolled in the inaugural softball program at the National Sports School in Calgary where I have played in my Grade 11 and 12 years and I will graduate in June of 2024, having attained silver medal status for academic achievement in Grade 11 during my first year at the school.
Moving forward, I will be devoted full-time to softball as my competitive ringette career is coming to an end. I am very much looking forward to an opportunity to grow as an athlete, teammate and person as I undertake a college softball career.
