Hello, my name is Cassandra Andrea Camacho. I am 17 years old and I am just finishing up my Junior-year at Coachella Valley High. I have played the position of catcher since I was eight years old in little league softball and I have played it ever since. I basically grew up with just my Mother. She had me at the very young age of 15 and few years after that my Father was incarcerated. My Father has never really been in my life because he has been incarcerated ever since I was a toddler. I would bounce back and forth from my Grandparent’s home (on my Father’s side), to my Grandma’s home (on my Mother’s side). I believe that lack of stability is what made me determined to be successful in life, so I can have my own stability as an adult.
It was during one of those stints at my Grandma’s house that I was introduced to the game of baseball/softball. My Mother’s older brother, my Uncle Nick, would play with me outside and taught me how to throw and catch a baseball. It then progressed to hitting and as soon as he taught me the basics of this game I knew I was hooked. I always knew that no matter how rough life got, I could always step on the softball field and forget all my problems. I love how the softball field is one of the ultimate equalizers. Equal in the sense that no matter where you come from or what your financial status is, none of that matters, as soon as you step on that field we are all the same. I have always made sure that my academics were more than adequate because I have always considered myself a student first, athlete second. I do plan to pursue and further my education after high school, my family has always stressed the importance of an education upon me and it has taken.
Softball has made me aware that I am a leader, it has taught me that I can be part of a team and I can be a team player. Being part of a team has made me aware that sometimes it is not always about the individual, sometimes we need to do what is right for the cause or just for the greater good. This is something that I will carry with me forever, this is something that will help me be a productive citizen and a better human being. Wherever I go, wherever I end up, I know I can contribute academically and athletically to that University, because one thing my life has taught me, is PERSEVERANCE! Thank you.
