My softball career really started when I was about 3 years old playing with my dad in the yard. My dad grew up playing baseball and even played at the college level with a little scout league for the Braves mixed in. While I was never forced to play, his love and passion for the game definitely influenced me in to playing softball. From a very young age we played a lot of catch and he pitched to me often, but the most important thing we did was watch baseball and softball games together. Never really cheering for one team or another, but more watching and talking about the games; allowing me to ask any questions I had and always helping me understand situations, decisions, and responsibilities of all the players. This I believe is what truly has helped me become the player I am today; not just the physical ability to be successful, but being a student of the game and loving the challenge of creating plans to help me and my team succeed based on what I am seeing from the other team.
While I have faced many obstacles and had many amazing experiences throughout my time playing softball so far, the highlight of my career was the time I got moved to right field for the last inning of a tied tournament elimination game. With bases loaded and a two run lead, I was playing deep to avoid doubles, when a shallow flyball was hit to right field. I sprinted in, diving I made the game-ending/winning catch while fully extended in the air. Had I missed the ball we would have lost the game. This was the first time I ever dove to catch a ball in the outfield and showed me that I can trust my abilities and not panic no matter the situation on the field.
The sport of softball has given me so much over the last 10 years. I have learned about desire, discipline, determination, honor, commitment, competition, work ethic, teamwork, sacrifice, and most of all family. Every team that I have been on has been like a second family to me and it feels amazing to know that you always have support if you need it, on the field, in the classroom, or at home. Without this sport which I have dedicated so much time and energy to I may not have learned these same things and developed into the person I am today. For that I am thankful every day. Over time I have learned that softball is not only a sport, but also tool to develop the life skills that will guide me along the path to accomplishing my ultimate goals; to compete in softball at the college level, to receive my medical degree and become a surgeon, and give back to the people and sport that helped me along the way.
