I started my life at the ball field watching my older brother play ball, and what followed has led me to not only want to pursue a college softball career, but also to pursue a career in sports medicine, physical therapy or athletic training after college. I am from a big sports family and grew up in a home with three brothers. Most all of our family’s “free” time was spent at practices, games and tournaments for me or my brothers. After playing t-ball softball at age 4, I was hooked … Almost 12 years later, this sport is still my passion!
Even though I’ve loved playing softball since the first time I played, my parents always encouraged my brothers and me to try different sports. That perspective allowed me to try many different sports and activities in addition to softball. Playing other sports allowed to cross train and helped me to push myself in activities that didn’t always come easy. As a freshman in high school, I was a three-sport athlete, playing softball, basketball and running distance events on my high school’s track team. Participating in basketball and running with other athletes who train for these sports year-round challenged me in new ways and helped me grow as an athlete and as a teammate. These experiences also solidified my belief that the greatest lessons I have learned as an athlete are the ones that come from my failures, and how I respond to those failures, rather than from my successes.
I also grew up in a faith-filled home. My faith is very important to me and I hope to have an opportunity to continue my academic and softball career at a Christ-centered school, or play for a coach who places an emphasis on faith. My faith influences everything I do -- at home, at school and on the field. That influence has helped me to develop unique leadership skills. Both socially, and in the sports that I play, I have been able to act as leader and unifier to bring people together with diverse backgrounds and interests, to reach a common goal. That influence has also helped me to serve as both a compassionate leader and encourager to my teammates. Those personality traits have served me well throughout my athletic career so far, particularly in my role as a catcher where I have the opportunity to lead, and take command of my team from behind the plate, but where I also have the opportunity to encourage and have my pitchers’ backs!
I believe that my unique background, experience, skill set, and work-ethic make me well-suited to not only play at a college level, but also to be a leader on whatever team I play. Thank you for taking the time to read this statement. I hope to have an opportunity to meet you in person at some point on my journey.
