My name is Gabriella Castro and I am a 2021 graduate from Rochester, Minnesota. I look forward to furthering my career in softball as a part of a collegiate team. Athletically, it has been a long road as I live in Minnesota so unless you play Hockey options are limited as far as competition goes in younger age groups. I began softball in the 6th grade; later than most other girls I met. Nonetheless I loved the game and being a part of a team who's drive to win didn't depend on what the snack was at half time, like soccer, which I had played for many years before. I have always had a competitive drive and have consistently been searching for more opportunity to better myself as an athlete. The 7 month Minnesota winters mean that outdoor activity is limited, so I commit a lot of time to the gym and batting cages in Oronoco (as we did not have batting cages in Rochester until 2019). I have been weight and endurance training since 8th grade. During the summers I have attended the endurance camp at my school 4 times a week in the mornings, even when I had softball later that day. Weight training, and especially Olympic lifting, combined with the other training I have done has pushed me to better my physical performance and mentality as an athlete. I enjoy seeing the results from hard work on and off the softball field. I am proud of my growth up to this point and I am looking forward to and very excited to learn as a collegiate athlete. I most look forward to learning new things from my coaches/teammates and becoming a part of a team with a competitive spirit.
Academically, I have always challenged myself. I feel fortunate to have parents who are there to push me to be where I am today. I am an AP/ Honors student with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and 4.7 weighted. The numbers mean less to me than the value of preparing myself for college. I am excited to pursue a career in the sciences and preform research while receiving my degree. I am a part of a few volunteering organizations, but I most enjoy tutoring in school or helping teachers in classes where they need extra assistance. I enjoy the challenge of my own classes but also the new environment I am a part of every day while assisting teachers.
