Hi Coach:
Thank you for taking the time to read this and my profile. I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about me beyond the statistics, videos and grades. I hope you find my personal statement helpful in your evaluation of me.
My family has been my greatest support system throughout my entire life because their love and support enable me and encourage me to follow my dreams. Throughout all my ups, downs, and in-betweens, they are there. My parents, especially, are the people who tell me if I need to step up my game, if I am doing well, and support me when things don't go so well. My family is who inspires me to work hard and be a leader.
I also draw a great deal of inspiration from my younger sister, Danica, who was born without a femur or hip on her right side. She has had many struggles in her short life and, over the summer of 2016, she had major surgery called a rotationplasty to rotate and re-(build) her femur, hip, knee and ankle. Her fighting spirit and tenacity with her rehabilitation is truly inspirational and if we are lucky enough to meet someday, perhaps you can experience it for yourself when you meet her. She is an inspiration not only to me, my brother and my parents, but almost everyone she meets. My experience with Danica have put me on a path to major in physical therapy or a medical related field where I can help people like my sister.
Playing team sports, like softball and field hockey, have taught me to be relentless, that hard work really does pay off, and to be a leader, displaying characteristics my team mates can emulate. I have also learned to focus in tough games by falling back on my training and to manage my emotions and maintain a positive attitude when something does not go the way I want it to, despite having tried my best. Finally, I have learned to stay calm in pressure situations and to not overthink what I am doing. I feel all of these things, regardless if I never pitch in another game, will benefit me in all areas of my life for years to come.
Some other words I would use to describe myself and that I value in others are kind, funny, trustworthy, team player, hardworking and leader. I strive to be kind and respectful to everyone I meet regardless of their position in life. I practice almost every day to perfect my skills because practice makes perfect, however, no matter how much you prepare, it’s not always going to go the way you want. I try not to take myself too seriously, my parents have helped me develop quite a sense of humor. Being helpful is very important to me because I actually enjoy helping and encouraging people who aren’t as fortunate or as skilled as others. I don’t like leaving someone behind if they don’t know how to do something. Finally, I am a loyal teammate because, although I might not be the loudest person on the team, I am certainly faithful to my teammates, my coaches and my family.
Again, thank you for your time.
Best Regards,
Courtney Wellet
