My name is Elaina Hansen. I am a student and an athlete that has a goal of obtaining my college degree while playing softball at a high collegiate level. I have played on organized sports teams for 11 years. In those years, the teams that I have played on have won games and lost many. But one of the most important things that I have realized in all the wins and all the losses is that being an athlete does not define me.
Two years ago during a fall softball tournament, my Great Grandmother had not been feeling well or faring well with her COPD diagnosis. I was very unsure of what to do. After I had spent the day with her talking and helping her out with whatever she needed, I then knew it was absolutely the best decision that I could have made. For no one would have ever known that two days later she would pass away. That special time that I got to spend with my great grandmother is so much more valuable than the 6 extra at bats to put on a stat sheet. It was then, that I had realized what truly defines who I am.
Being an athlete has been a very large part of my life and I absolutely love playing softball, but in the process I have learned that there is so much more to me than just being an athlete and playing the game. I am looking forward to growing even more as an individual in college, and I am very excited to begin a new chapter of my life. I will continue to work hard on becoming the best student and the best athlete that I can be. I will not allow one thing to define me but have many things define me. Time is moving so fast that I want to make sure that I use every second that is gifted to me, in the best way possible.
