Hi coach, my name is Lyla Dwyer (class of 2025). I pitch and play center field for the Dutchess Debs and John Jay - East Fishkill HS. I played JV as an 8th grader and varsity as a freshman in a strong HS program while playing two years of Varsity tennis and maintaining strong grades. I’ve continued to push myself in softball playing Varsity as a freshman, moving to a stronger travel team and guest playing regularly. In each case, I quickly became an important member of the team, watching how better players perform and learning from new coaches. Each time I’ve moved up, it was an adjustment for me and uncomfortable to start, but I’m glad I did it and it was good for my confidence. My coaches would say I’m quiet, using my arm, glove, and bat as my voice - which my mom says makes me a better listener. While I’m quiet on the outside, I’m ultra-competitive on the inside…my family has always competed in EVERYTHING: sports, games, grades, getting in the car first…my dad never lets me win, his dad never let him win and I never let my little sister win…:)
As a pitcher I always fight to keep my team in the game as a starter or reliever. When I bat, I am a contact hitter with good speed to put pressure on defenses. I love taking extra bases and pride myself on almost never striking out - 1 K in 53 plate appearances for JJ Varsity last year in a competitive section 1 AA, 2K’s for travel in spring and zero in the fall. Coach always says I’m a tough out. Last season we faced the #1 pitcher in NY state for varsity against Monroe Woodbury (who was throwing gas) and I was the only person on my team (which included 3 D1 commits) to put the ball in play twice with solid contact both times, which I was proud of. My ideal college team is one that will allow me to continue to grow as both a pitcher and a position player and to keep challenging me outside of my comfort zone. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me.

I know I have a lot more to learn about softball and I want to find my next uncomfortable challenge to grow and learn from.
