My name is Esmeralda Telles and I’m going into my senior year at Pleasant Valley High School. I am currently one of two captains on my travel team Warren County Crush 18U and their starting 3rd baseman. I am on the Varsity team at PVHS. My primary position is 3rd base with my secondary position as 1st base. I have been playing sports for as long as I could remember and would switch between soccer and softball.
Throughout the years, I have had many challenges I needed to overcome. Being a daughter to two military parents made it difficult to settle in. Being able to settle down for my high school years has helped me solidify my skills and has allowed me to build better bonds and interactions with all my teammates. My biggest challenge occurred last year in 2022 when both my physical and mental limits would be pushed. I ruptured my ACL in my left knee right before HS softball tryouts. I ended up having reconstructive surgery and was originally given a recovery time of 12-18 months. I was determined not only to return to the sport I loved but wanted to make sure my skills continued to develop despite my injury. Only 9 months into my recovery I was cleared to return to sports. I am also proud of myself for maintaining a 3.3 GPA despite this major injury during my school year and am currently an honor-roll student. This experience has become a driver in the field of physical therapy to help others as they did with me.
Some of my extracurricular activities outside of sports are volunteering. I have been a general volunteer with Girls on the Run- Poconos for over a year now and have supported them during their various fundraising events and 5k runs. This summer, I plan on being a Junior Coach in their summer camp in hopes of expanding my leadership skills. I have also been involved with the German-American Exchange Program at PVHS since last year when my teacher recommended me due to my good grades and character. I am currently involved in the Key Club at PVHS as it focuses on volunteer work between our school and the community. Despite being undecided on my college major, one thing I know for sure is that I will continue to work hard to make my dream of playing college softball come true.
