My name is Rachel Sanders and I am from Concord California. Going into high school I had one main goal, and that was to make varsity as a freshman. Not only did I reach my goal but I exceeded it. I was a starter right away, then quickly became the leader of our league in threes, and eventually got awarded first-team all-league while collecting many tournament MVPs along the way by the time I reached the end of my junior year! When playing basketball you learn tons of important skills. You learn what is needed to be a working teammate, problem-solving, and how to be a quick thinker, but the unexpected skill I’ve learned from playing basketball all these years is the importance of dedication and perseverance. When I began my high school career my team won little to no games but every single day we went out there ready to fight with our hearts, refusing to give up regardless of the score. I’ve spent countless hours making sure I improved my skillset individually despite how hard it might’ve been in the beginning. I’m confident now that wherever I end up, all that extra time I put into my game was beyond worth it because it made me a better person in the long run. My biggest takeaway is that no matter how well you think you can do something, there is always room for improvement. If you want it, you must work for it. This is why I want to play basketball in college. It enhances life and would give me the chance to learn lessons and gain quick-thinking skills all while playing the sport I love most.
