My name is Liliana ‘Cookie’ Marques and I started playing basketball in the 6th grade. Prior to basketball, I played competitive tennis but found myself drawn more to a team sport. I liked the atmosphere of a group working together to reach the same goal. Since then I have worked tirelessly to reach my full potential on and off the court as a player, leader, and teammate.
I was lucky enough to start my high school career in a well-established basketball program at West Campus High School in Sacramento, California. I was a starter and a core member of the varsity team my freshman and sophomore year. Both years I had "honorable mention" in the Golden Empire League. During my sophomore year at West Campus, we had an amazing season and not only won the section title but also the D4 State Championship Title.
My Junior year, I chose to push myself out of my element and transfer schools. I knew leaving a school that just won a state championship wasn't a easy decision to make. I felt that it was a better move for me to enhance my skill and development on a personal level. It was a good change for me environmentally and academically as well. We were a team of six coming together for the first time. We made strides as a team with lots of tears and no subs but we persevered. We were mocked a lot due to our 6 man crew. We won every game in our league and made it into the CIF State girls Division IV playoffs. As the 11th seed, nobody thought we would make it as far as the Regional Semi-Finals.
I have learned to be more of a leader, listener, and a good teammate. I train extensively, sometimes up to three hours a day for at least six days out of my week, in an attempt to reach the apex of my ability. I’m looking for a school that will challenge me both academically and athletically. I’m motivated to learn and feel that I am coachable on and off the court which, I think, would make me an asset to a college basketball program.
