I fell in love with basketball in the first grade. I played other sports like softball and soccer but I never developed the passion for those sports like I had for being on the court with a basketball in my hand. When I was younger I was short, quick and a decent ball handler so I was a natural point guard. I had been trained that my job was to run the offense and be the ball distributor. That all changed this year as I entered high school for my freshman year. I have grown 8 inches over the last 18 months to my current height of 6'0". I had the honor and privilege of being selected as a freshman to be a member of the Union Grove varsity basketball team. However, being 6'0" I was now one of the tallest players on the school team. My coach told me he knew he was asking me to do something I had never done, but he needed me to play the shooting guard and small forward positions. I not only had to learn new positions as a Freshman while playing against girls much more experienced than myself, but I also had to adapt from being someone who always looked to pass first, to now being someone who looked to score. I am currently 15 years old and not only one of the youngest in my class, but also one of the youngest varsity players in our region. This season had it's challenges but it made me a much better player and gave me a better understanding of the game of basketball now that I have played multiple positions. My parents told me that Freshman usually do not play much at the varsity level and I was not sure how much playing time I would earn. When the season began, I was the first or second sub off the bench depending on matchups on the floor. By January, I had earned a starting sport and remained a starter through the region tournament.
My career ambitions are not etched in stone but my current interest is in Forensic Science. I have other interest as well so I am keeping my degree options open. My dream is to play basketball at the collegiate level. I spent several weekends this winter attending basketball games at all different division levels to see what it was going to take to play college basketball and make my dream a reality. I know I am young and the Class of 2020 seems like a long way away but I am starting my search now to find a school and a basketball program that causes everything inside me to say "this is where I belong". If you asked my coaches to describe me, I think and hope they would say she is coachable!! I do my best to execute whatever the coach ask me to do on the floor. Yes I made some of those Freshman mistakes but I learned from them and believe I became a player that my coaches knew they could trust when the game was hanging in the balance. I have a very competitive spirit. I know sometimes that can be viewed as a negative but I take winning and losing hard and I want to do whatever I can to help my team win. I also believe my freshman season shows that I can adapt to change. I was put in positions I had never experienced before and it was hard and out of my comfort zone at times but I faced the challenge and it made me better. I'm a team player who does not worry about personal stats. I just want to find that team where my personality fits, my skills can help them win, and I can become a part of their "family".
