It is sometimes said that how you play basketball is how you live your life. I see so much truth in this statement and can make connections to see how it’s true. I’m focused and driven, often staying after practice to shoot some more and coming in on the weekends to get shots up or work on ball handling. I am a hard worker, determined to get the job done right. The quality of my work is very important to me. While this applies to basketball, it also applies to my education. I truly enjoy learning new things and being able to apply them to my life. I desire to encourage and build others up, while also living up to my highest potential. I’m an honest student, with integrity, who does the right thing. I’m humble and tend to not want to bring attention to myself. I want to continue to grow my character and to shine a light to those around me.
While playing basketball in college is a dream, this is not why I play the game. Since I was young, I’ve loved basketball, whether it’s a workout by myself or with my teammates. There are days where time in the gym can put a day in perspective. I am 5’8” and started as a shooting guard for the Spirit Lake Indians for the 2022-2023 season. Some of my favorite memories my junior year was when our team beat #2 Unity Christian in double overtime on Dec. 2 or when I hit four three-pointers for my team against #1 Estherville Lincoln Central on Jan. 13. This summer we played in 18 games and three team camps. It was exciting to watch our team come together but also see how I've elevated my game.
My desire is to always play a game where I give everything, doing the little things to help my team win - whatever is needed for that game. As a starter, I also have the responsibility to set an example for the younger girls on the team to always work hard and to build each other up. During my junior season, I hit 35 three-pointers and finished with 158 points. I had 61 rebounds, 32 assists, 41 steals and 45 turnovers. This summer we played a lot of 4a and 5a Iowa teams and I found I played my best games against the tougher teams.
During this off-season, my goals were to become a better shooter, increasing my 3-point percentage in a fast-paced game. I also really worked hard on creating finishing moves at the hoop, as well as focus on fundamentals, my footwork and getting stronger. I love defense and taking a part the other team's offense. I can guard the point guard to the center, just depending on our defense set. Our team did off-season workouts all summer, as well as did regular individual workouts with several local trainers and will continue this season.
While I love playing basketball, I also value my studies. Now entering my senior year, I will be graduating with the class of 2024. I have a 3.95 GPA and have gotten a 26 on my ACT and plan to take again in September. I have taken college classes throughout high school, love science and considering pre-med, bioscience, or biochemistry as degree options.
