I didn’t start playing basketball until I was in middle school. During those first seasons, I had to work ten times harder than the other players around me because they'd been playing longer. I began my freshman season on the bench for my high school junior varsity team. Through hard work, I earned my way into a starting position by the end of the season. Our team that year went undefeated and won our district and division championships.
During Covid, basketball shut down in my area and I missed playing my sophomore year. As soon as basketball reopened, even though it was a risk to try something new, I stepped up and went out for an AAU team that already had a full roster. I earned a starting spot on the team and became a leader for the team that season.
Breaking into my high school varsity team my junior year has been difficult. Coming up from the JV, I had to prove that I could play as a starter. As the season progressed, I showed that I could serve the team as a leader and that I was an invaluable defensive player who created game-changing moments for the team. We started the season 0-5. As we come to the end of the season, we are 8-8. Even though I started the season on the bench, I believe I will be the team captain next year and I’m looking forward to continuing to lead the team to victory.
I love being a part of a team. I think it comes from being a part of a big and close-knit family. I’ve grown up in a small house with four brothers and I've hung out weekly with my thirteen cousins. I’m known as the family member who brings enthusiasm, energy, and joy to our family gatherings. Playing basketball gives me the opportunity to bring those same qualities to every game and practice.
On the court, I’m an aggressive risk taker who puts the needs of the team above my own personal glory. I learned this from my family. My parents made sure I was always a part of diverse communities and we are focused as a family on helping others. I bring this same attitude to my basketball game.
If you give me a chance to play for your team, you will be surprised at how hard I work. I’m not afraid of doing whatever it takes to improve my game. I feel better about myself when I have to push myself to achieve my goals. At the same time, I will help create a strong team atmosphere that will empower us to win.
