When I lived in an orphanage in Uganda with my siblings my eventual adoptive father brought a basketball and showed us how to dribble. I thought it was really cool when he dribbled between his legs. When he came back to visit us a month later I was excited to show him that I could dribble between my legs like him! I guess it was then, at age 5, when I fell in love with basketball. When we moved to Arizona I played on a boys team as the only girl. When we moved to Minnesota I started playing travel basketball on a Mankato team. We finished 3rd at State my first two seasons, but finally in 6th grade we won it. That is one of my favorite basketball memories. I was the point guard and leading scorer on all of those teams. I am very proud to say that I also won a sportsmanship award at a tournament in New Prague during our championship season.
In 7th grade I started out on the 7th grade team, but was moved up to C squad and then JV. It was great to play against older girls who were really good on JV from other schools. By the end of my 7th grade year I was the starting point guard on JV at Mankato West High School where about 1200 kids attend. In 8th grade I was the starting point guard on the JV team again and played some varsity. I was the leading scorer on JV. I only averaged a point or two per game on varsity, but it was a great experience even just practicing with my great teammates (one received division 1 offers as a 10th grader). In one game I did score 5 points in the 3 minutes I played.
Spring and summer of my 8th grade year I started playing AAU for the first time. I have 7 brothers and sisters so in the past it has been hard for my family to commit to all the traveling involved. I have played a lot of shooting guard and some point guard. It has been a great experience playing against some of the best girls in the state at my age. I continue to practice and improve and have been the leading scorer in many games. I have also put in extra time and effort into trying to impact the game in other areas. I think this will help me improve the varsity team as a freshman this next year. My athleticism has led the coach to have me guard the opponent's best offensive player at times. It also helps me get valuable rebounds on both ends of the court. This AAU season has allowed me to improve my all-around game a lot! I do plan on playing AAU when I am in high school as well.
I am an A/B student and I want to continuing playing basketball in college. I love the game. I love getting better. I love becoming friends with teammates. I love winning! I still have all of high school left so I am very unsure about where I would like to attend college. Thanks!
