I started playing basketball at the age of seven, and for a long time, it was just a fun activity I shared with my friends. By middle school, it had become my favorite sport. The constant opportunity to grow and improve my skills keeps me driven. Basketball is so important to me that when my mom surprised our family with a Christmas cruise last year, I was genuinely torn because it meant I would miss two games!
It hasn’t always been easy, but my love for the game has kept me going, even through challenges. During my first high school season last year, I faced a difficult situation when a teammate’s personal issues made school life outside of basketball tense. It was a stressful time, but the silver lining is it helped heighten my focus on the game as I learned to block out distractions. This mindset ultimately helped me earn a starting position on the varsity team, and I gave my best effort in every game. A memorable moment is we made it to the playoffs against the #1 team in our division. They had a heavy lead and as the clock wound down the last seconds in the final quarter I hated to admit defeat and still attempted to steal the ball while everyone else seemed seemed frozen in their positions waiting for the buzzer. We didn't win that game but I'm determined to maintain that same intensity.
Now, as my sophomore season approaches, I’m excited for what lies ahead. My teammates have really bonded, especially after completing our fall soccer season together. I’m eager to contribute to a positive, collaborative team atmosphere that will help us compete at our best and have a successful season.
I have big dreams of continuing to play basketball at the college level, and I'm working every day to make that a reality.
