Izzy (Isabella) Martens '26 Recruiting Profile

My name is Isabella (Izzy) Martens. I am in the class of 2026 from Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School in Ontario, Canada.                                                      I have been playing basketball since I was seven years old. Even though I cried all the way to my first practice, I soon fell in love with the sport. Basketball is my passion. Basketball is what motivates me, makes me happy, and gets me out of bed in the morning. When I play I can't worry or overthink. I would love nothing more than to compete at the college level and continue my passion for as long as possible.                                                                                                                                                                           I am a coachable and determined athlete. I am great at leading, motivating and making sure my teammates stay calm under pressure. I am adaptable and easily make friends on any team I join. I may not be the tallest player on the court, but what I lack in height I make up for in strength and toughness. I am not one who gets pushed around or leaves the court because of an injury. My coaches jokingly call me "pit bull",like the dog, because of my ability to push my way through a crowd and always get the rebound as the shortest person on the court. I am not afraid to get pushed around and I openly take many offensive charges during games, dive for loose balls, or aggressively rip the ball from somebodies hands. As a point guard, I have an eye for recognizing when my teammates are open and delivering them a precise pass and  creating plays that move the defence around and set my teammates, or myself, up for an open shot or layup.                                                                                                      As a student-athlete, I maintain a 4.0 GPA and participate in school teams and clubs, such as the athletic counsel. Academically, my goal is to either study kinesiology or law in university. Two very different subjects but I have many interests.                                                                                                                         Like many other athletes,I have experienced roadblocks, bad coaches, doubt and failure, but those struggles just motivated me to train more and build confidence in my abilities. I have learned that you only gain confidence if you have given yourself a reason to be confident. I will be a valuable asset to any team I play on, and I will constantly put in the time and effort to be the best version of myself, both on and off the court.
