My primary goal as a college diver is to further expand my capabilities as an athlete and a leader. I have been training and diving with my club team since I was six and a half years old and for the past three years as a member of the Bishop Kenny Swimming and Diving Team. I have competed at both the national level for my club team and at the state level for my high school team.
Based on my own experience as a young diver, I know the importance of having someone to look up to, whether that person is a parent, coach or an older team member. I have found that being a leader isn’t a title that is given to you, it is something you have to earn and comes with an enormous amount of responsibility.
As a leader it is important for me to embody good sportsmanship, good work ethic, a positive attitude and to lead by example for younger or less experienced divers on my team.
When I say my team, I don’t take these words lightly, this is my extended family, my support system and some of the closest friends that I have. As one of the older divers on my team, I am a person that people can look up to, not just because I have been there longer and know how things work, but because I am someone people trust and feel comfortable talking to. My leadership helps the younger members learn how to support and guide each other, allowing me to one day pass the torch and keep the team strong. Having this type of support system is what helps me pick myself up when I fall and to never give up because I know that I have a safety net in my team.
In addition to being a dedicated athlete I also am a dedicated student. I have challenged myself by taking both honors and AP courses and have been able to maintain a 4.1 GPA. I was inducted into the National Honor Society at the end of my sophomore year.
I believe that the experiences in my life have helped me to become a stronger person; someone that others believe is trustworthy, compassionate, and responsible. These characteristics will make me an invaluable addition to whatever college or university that I attend and the embodiment of a scholar athlete.
