First and foremost, my primary goal in college is to prepare myself to succeed in life. From a very early age, I have known that I want to pursue a career in healthcare. Medicine interests me so much because of my passion for helping others and my ability to empathize with almost everyone. I want to attend a school that will challenge me academically and will help me get into medical school. I am someone who thoroughly enjoys challenges; I find that challenge is what produces growth. While I am proud to be the only diver from my high school to qualify to state, I am more proud of what I have overcome to get there. The many injuries I sustained in gymnastics led to me developing a chronic pain condition that I have been learning how to navigate throughout my entire diving career. While I can't remember the last day I didn't experience some sort of pain, this condition has only made me stronger, both physically and mentally. Living with chronic pain affects every aspect of my life and brings about different challenges, but I have since learned how to push myself in ways many people never will.
Prior to diving, I was a competitive gymnast for 11 years. Gymnastics taught me many things, such as spatial awareness. However, gymnastics also helped shape me into the hard-working, determined, and self-motivating person I am today. After a back injury in 2017, I decided to switch to diving and have been in love with it ever since. I have been diving for about three and a half years (with close to two of those years off the boards to recover from past injuries that resurfaced). I competed on the varsity level for four high school seasons, placing fourth at sections in 2018 (on an ankle that needed surgery) and winning sections in 2019 (in which sections was the only meet I competed in because of a season-long injury) and 2020.
While I am a competitive person, I am my biggest motivator, not others. I am constantly looking for ways to improve as a diver, student, and person. As a collegiate student-athlete, I can accomplish that every day. My biggest commitment in life is to serve others. My family, teachers, coaches, and teammates see that commitment in the relationships I build with others. In my 2020 high school diving season, I was the diving leader (which is similar to a captain but focuses on representing the divers). I was voted to be a captain in the 2021 season, too. As an introvert, it can be difficult for me to reach out to others; however, my overwhelming compassion leads me to connect with others and form deep and meaningful relationships. While I am excited to potentially dive and contribute athletically to a school and team, the team will also benefit from my dedication to helping others and seeing them succeed.
