Personal Statement
I am fourteen years old and I love golf! However, there is more to me than golf. In my free time I like to create Arts & Crafts, spend time with my friends, and collect rocks and quarters. My favorite number is 2 and my favorite color is aqua. I really like school and my favorite subject is math. I’m somewhat of a math nerd – thanks to my Daddy! I also enjoy watching The Weather Channel – especially during hurricane season. My favorite book is A Wrinkle in Time. If I could eat ice cream every day, I would! My favorite flavor of ice cream is Birthday Cake! I have been participating in local beauty pageants since the age of four. I have won five titles. I enjoy the competition of the pageants, but I really enjoy the comradery I get with the other girls in the pageant. It’s a time I get to show my “girlie” side!
I had to have my adenoids removed when I was fifteen months old. I had to receive speech therapy in elementary school because I was suffering from a slight hearing loss in both ears. This hearing loss has been something I’ve had to manage my entire life. I make it a point to look people directly in the face when speaking with them, I ask for clarification when I “miss” something that is being said, in other words, it has made me take ownership of my world. There are no excuses in my life. I am who I am and I have to make the best with what I’ve been given.
Golf has also helped me to build the self-confidence I had to work on in school. Since it is just me and the course, I can’t rely on anyone to do it for me. I love my Coach, Coach Say. He allows me to struggle until I find what works best for me as an athlete. I speak up for myself. I don’t allow the opposing player to do mind-tricks with me during a match. I am worthy and deserve to be on the course just like everyone else. I am Black Girl Magic!
