When I'm asked what my biggest accomplishment is.... it's playing golf. Golf isn't a simple four letter word. It's a game that has taught me mental strength, how to play with other people of varying abilities, and how to be honest at all times.
GOLF causes you to doubt yourself without even knowing it. Every player on the field has their strengths, but when you fear you aren't good enough, your focus can get cloudy. High School golf has taught me to play with a clearer mind. I've played at many tournaments within the past three years and have seen hundred of girls, of all skill levels, with their coaches who are all equally supportive. It's a group of people who are there for different reasons. Some have been playing their entire lives while others are just learning. Whether you are paired with the best player out there, or the worst, you still have to treat everyone with the same respect.
GOLF is also one of the only sports that doesn't have a referee. It's called a "gentlemen's sport" because everyone is in charge of penalizing themselves, as well as others. You are responsible for knowing the rules, paying attention to everyone else's score, as well as being honest about your own score.
GOLF takes many years of practice. Every day your swing changes a little, and every day there is a new problem to fix. So going hand-in-hand with determination, you must also have patience. I have learned to push myself to be better, but also to accept the ups and downs of the game. Some days you will play great, and other, not so much. Golf has taught me to take a step back and breath.
You may be asking yourself... is GOLF the beginning and end for this High School athlete? It is the most important SPORT I play, but as I discussed above GOLF can be physically and mentally taxing. I love to spend my down time playing the piano, taking voice lessons, and teaching myself new instruments to play. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. I now learn to play new songs by ear on the the piano and the ukulele/guitar. Academically, my spare time is used competing in Speech Contests. This past year, I wrote and competed in a speech contest for the Rotary Club. I won at my High School Level, Local Level, District level, and went to Regionals. It was there that I placed 2nd. Competing in Speech Contests give me confidence and a voice.
A well lived life is one of balance. Mental strength, playing well with others, and taking a deep breath. I am a well rounded High School athlete. Please consider me for your program.
