As a person who is very involved at school and in the community, I have learned how important it is to communicate as well as make time for all my commitments. Throughout high school, I played four sports: football, soccer, golf, and track and field. I work as a club soccer referee, volunteer as a city soccer referee, and am part of our FFA program. Doing so many things can be stressful, but for me, it is a privilege and an honor to be able to do the things I love. I have been an officer for our FFA program for two years while simultaneously raising two guide dogs for the blind. I also foster dogs who have been rescued from shelters for a non-profit organization. I recently accepted an internship at a local veterinary clinic. I am proud to say I have earned over 700 community service hours. All my extracurricular activities have really taught me how to work with a team and excel individually. It has also taught me to be willing to learn from others and take advice because you don’t know everything.
In the classroom, I work really hard and maintain a high GPA. After returning to the classroom from COVID, I found that I was struggling with math. I took the time to re-take courses to improve my understanding and raise my GPA. I am very thankful I did because now I am able to take on a fifth year of math.
Being the only female on the football team in high school taught me a lot. It was very strenuous, both mentally and physically. I had to earn my way onto the team, just like all the other players. I had to work harder than the other players to show that I deserved to be there as much as they did. It was an amazing experience to be part of the brotherhood. I earned their respect and was accepted once the players and coaches realized I did not want them to cut me any slack “just for being a girl." I am proud to say that I was pulled up to the Varsity Team when we went to CIF and became city champions. This experience helped me in all of my other sports to be a strong team member and a very coachable athlete.
Throughout life, there is always going to be some kind of setback; mine was in December 2023. After two years as league champions, in a soccer game, I ended up tearing my ACL, resulting in surgery. At the time, I held a grudge, but I soon realized that this was God's way of paving a new path for me and my future. I had just gotten seriously back into golf again in the summer of 2023 and joined the high school varsity team. I was unable to play football because I sustained multiple concussions. I have a personal golf coach who is helping me improve my body mechanics as well as my game. You can only imagine how much it affected me, not knowing if I was going to be able to play sports the next season. Golf used to just be a hobby of mine; I took it up at a young age while following my sister on the course from high school and into college. This sport has really become a safe haven for me after being allowed to play again this summer following my ACL surgery. My love for the sport has blossomed, just as it has for my big sister. I am working hard on the golf course every day to strengthen my abilities on the course and have registered for some tournaments through the SCPGA. I realized that you can never take things for granted in life, and you should always pursue your dreams. So I’m going to do just that: play golf in college.
I have worked very hard and been successful in balancing all my commitments. I have earned high respect from my educators and coaches. In college, I want to major in animal science, focusing on veterinary medicine and radiology. I believe that my heavy course load, working as a referee, volunteering, and athletics have prepared me for the challenges of academics and playing golf in college.
