My golf game has improved dramatically since the start of my junior year, with my scoring average dropping three strokes. Unlike some other junior golfers, my scoring average is more indicative of my ability to play competitively at the college level because I do not play many events less than 5700 yards and play in many events exceeding 6000 yards. Some of the highlights over the last nine months include a T4 of 87 in the HJGT National Championship with a 68 on the second day, a victory at the Optimist Midwest Qualifier (75-75), a victory in a HJGT tournament, and a T5 in the Golfweek event at Purdue’s Ackerman course (76-78). I missed qualifying for the USGA Junior Girls Championship by one stroke. However, winning the Optimist Midwest Qualifier gives me the opportunity to play in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in July.
In my last 11 events I have seven top-five finishes, four top-three finishes, and three victories. My unadjusted scoring average is 76.9 over those last 11 events. The course yardage has ranged from 5600 to 6300 yards. The tournaments I am most happy with include:
At IMG Academy, we do not play in high school golf events put on by state athletic associations. Instead, we play in tournaments conducted by private junior golf touring organizations, such as the HJGT, the AJGA, and the IMG JT. Therefore, I have never played in a state high school tournament.
My college aspirations include preliminary health care studies and competitive golf. I moved to Florida as a high school freshman to attend IMG Academy as a boarding student. IMG Academy is a college-like experience where the professors and coaches demand personable accountability, time management and daily competition. The IMG experience is different than most high schools because we practice golf and train every day of the school year, from the end of August through the end of May. My typical day starts at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday), forcing me to master time management skills to obtain good grades.
I have done well academically even though 13 of the 16 classes I have taken thus far were Honors or AP level. In fact, as a junior, I sought out a particularly challenging class outside of IMG Academy to help ensure I was being exposed to diverse coursework. I took an AP Music Theory class as an online student through the Levine School of Music in Washington DC. It was grueling, but worth it.
Outside of golf and school, I spend time volunteering for Reading Ally, Pathfinders Food Pantry, and The Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. I have been working to complete the piano certification through the Royal Conservatory of Music, thus far completing through Level 5. This has included First-Class Honors, with Distinction (Level 2) and Honors (Level 4).
I am interested in joining a college team that is competitive, at a college that will challenge me academically. My tournament history demonstrates that I can be an asset to any college team at any level. My academic success achieved despite a rigorous daily school and training schedule demonstrates that I can succeed academically at any college while also juggling the demands of golf practice and tournament travel.
