Personal Statement

Tierney Baumstark (Class of 2023)

I'm determined, very focused, goal-oriented and seek out challenges. Golf challenges you every time you play. It helps you develop mental toughness and character. It's what makes me love the game so much.  I held my first golf club when I was about 2.  I really started playing consistently when I was about 10 and it very quickly became my favorite thing to do.

I just finished my high school junior season with Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri.  I’m a member of the varsity team. After winning our conference and district championships, Rock Bridge placed 4th in Class 4 (the highest class) at the state championship at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo. Individually, I finished T6th out of the 80+ competitors and tied for the lowest score on day 2 with a 73 (+1).  It was a great experience both for my team and for me as an individual competitor. This season I earned all-state, first team all-district and first team all-conference honors. I had 3 match wins, 8 top 5 finishes and two top 10 finishes, including my T6th finish at state.

I‘m continuing to play this winter and recently finished T18 (2-day score of 157) out of a field of 100 girls in the Hurricane Junior Tour National Championship Tournament in Orlando, Florida.

Earlier in my 2021 summer season, I had 7 top 10 finishes. I placed 4th in the Missouri Junior Match Play Championship and 8th in the Missouri Junior Am. I was also fortunate to be selected as one of six junior players to represent Missouri in the Four State Championship by the Missouri Golf Association. Our team finished as runner-up in the 3-day tournament.

In 2020, I was the Missouri Golf Association Junior Tour Championship Runner-up shooting a 78-79 in the two-day tournament. I finished 6th in my division in the 2020 Missouri Junior Amateur Championship shooting a 79-80. In 2019, I was the Missouri Golf Association Junior Tour Points Champion (14-15 Division) and placed third in the MGA Junior Tour Championship. As a member of the varsity Rock Bridge High School Girls’ Golf Team, I was part of the team that won the 2020 conference championship and the 2020 district championship. I placed 3rd individually at districts with a 77.  Our team qualified for state and placed fourth. Individually, I placed in the top 25 out of 72 players in the state tournament. I earned second-team all-conference and all-district honors as a sophomore.

I currently play on the MGA Junior Tour, the MGA Accelerated Tour, the Gateway PGA Junior Tour, the AJGA and Hurricane Junior tours to further my golf aspirations.

In addition to golf, I was a member of the 2019-20 Rock Bridge High School Freshman Girls’ Basketball Team and I ran track. I earned 'Most Improved Player' honors for my basketball team efforts in the 2019-20 season and was recognized as a 3-sport athlete by my school in 2020.

In 2021, I received the Rock Bridge High School Rising Bruin Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. I'm especially proud, honored and humbled by that recognition because it's selected by fellow student-athletes from nominations submitted by coaches from all 23 high school sports offered at my high school. I believe being a good teammate is just as, if not more important, than being an outstanding individual competitor.

I’m committed to school, maintaining a 3.92 GPA, and have an interest in pursuing a career in the medical profession. I also enjoy art and have participated in several art shows in my hometown.

My parents, Frank and Michelle, are very supportive of my commitment to golf and I have a younger sister, Emma (14), who also plays golf, runs track and enjoys art.

One of my favorite golf quotes:  "Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots, you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play the ball where it lies." - Bobby Jones

  • Day 1: (E) 71 Conditions: wet/ thunderstorms 5-10mph winds 90°F Pretty proud of the way I played today. I was conservative and let birdies and pars come to me without trying to force an opportunity. I made an eagle on the front 9 and another birdie but ended up carding a (-1) 34 on the front 9 I had 8 straight pars in the back 9 to finish at an even 71. I had lots of birdie opportunities today and hit 15/18 greens and only missed 2 fairways. I felt very very comfortable being under par and remained conservative with my shots all day. I was in first place after day one. Day 2: (+5) 76 Conditions: wet 3-5mph wind 85°F I got off to a tough start with a few missed Ik and downs that I definitely could have made. The putter was ice cold today for short putts on the front 9 and ran into some swing problems with a pull miss. I was able to figure out how to fix this at the turn by paying closer attention to where my body was and found that my should was open and causing a pull miss. I went even on the back 9 with 2 birdies to shoot a 76. Total: (+5) 71, 76 147 Place: 2nd 🥈 Course: Warren Golf Course
  • Camp/Event
  • Missouri Golf Association Match Play Championship
  • 6/13/22 to 6/16/22
  • Won both the stroke play and match play championships Day 1: (+10) 81 Conditions: 15-25mph winds, 105°F, very dry 12/18 greens hit 8/14 fairways Tough conditions today with some extreme heat and wind staying hydrated was really important. I had three doubles today all from course management. Greens were rolling very fast and my short game wasn’t where I wanted or needed it to be. I knew I wanted to improve for the next day, so I mapped all of my shots from that day, and found that the majority of them were uncommitted shots. So I made sure to commit to my shots on day 2 and manage my misses better. Day 2: (+4) 75 Greens hit: 11/18 Fairways: 9/14 Conditions: Very dry, 103°F, 20-25mph winds Faced extreme heat and wind again but was able to improve the shot game a LOT from the day before. I made 2 birdies and got up and down over 60% of the time. I made sure to be fully committed to each shot before I hit it. I really had to scramble today because of some tree trouble, but saw some major improvements from the day before. I had great proximity to the hole and made it a priority to eliminate big numbers on the scorecard, and when I did miss-hit a shot I made sure to make the next one great. Total: (+14 81, 75) Place: 1st 🥇 Course: Shirkey Golf Course Match play Summary: Day 1: 2 matches, won 9&8 and 7&5 Conditions: Very Dry, 95°F, 15-20mph winds Total holes: 22 I went into playing these rounds with a winning mindset, trying to make every shot great and executing my shots all to the best of my ability. I putted well and got up and down multiple times when I needed to. My distance wedges could have been better. I had to take in at least 10 yards of rollout because the course was playing so dry which is hard to keep a long iron or a wedge on the green. Day 2: 2 matches, won 4&3 and 2&1 Conditions: Dry, 99°F, 3-5mph winds Total holes: 33 I went in with a winning mindset and I won the Junior Match Play Championship. We got a little bit of rain the night before which softened the greens up just enough to keep a wedge or long iron on the green. I had GREAT proximity to the hole having a look for birdie on nearly every hole. This was a real confidence booster going into my second match of the day. I focused like I had the day before, making sure to execute the shot to the best of my ability. During the championship match I was up 4 with 4 to play and let 2 holes slip. I was feeling the pressure for sure, but managed to win the Championship after 17 holes of golf in my second round. Making that 91 total competition holes in 4 days. I faced some adversity with conditions, a rain delay and a dead rangefinder when finishing my round, but some Short game and clutch birdie rebounds after tough holes held my game together Day 2: (+3) 75 16/18 greens hit 12/14 fairways hit Conditions: 85°F Dry, 3-5mph winds Lots of birdie opportunities today many where within 5ft. Ball striking was great. Putting just needs a little more work from inside 5-10FT was (E) thru 14 holes and did much better on holes that gave me some trouble the day before.
