Hello I am Sophia Stultz, a senior at Our Lady Of Mercy Academy located in Newfield New Jersey.
I never touched a golf club before February of my freshman year, a month before tryouts for the OLMA golf team, and so it was a given that I was placed on the B team. The B team was a developmental squad; we did not compete in matches. Being placed on the B team was nothing more than motivation. After that, I was determined to work towards the goal of being varsity my sophomore season. While I dedicated myself to my goal, I found a passion for golf. I found interest in the different techniques for various situations and how everyone has their own distinctive thought process and swing. Slowly, I honed my techniques at the driving range every week. When I entered my sophomore year, I came in "full swing". Since sophomore year I have been on varsity and started every varsity match since. I led my school to its first-ever golf victory in school history. I have participated in a county and tri-county match.
I applied those lessons to other aspects of my life as well. I picked up multiple leadership roles as an elected class representative and as a student ambassador. I volunteered in my community. I took other risks, too, embracing uncertainty with my school’s DECA organization, as well as the fashion and yoga clubs, activities with which I had had no previous experience but which brought me a great sense of accomplishment. Even my commitment to academics, which has always been a strength, improved, something that is certain to benefit me as I move toward graduation.
I plan to continue to play golf at a college level and major in nursing, a goal that will help me achieve my other goal of being a nurse practitioner. I hope to continue achieving in the field of oncology.
Through golf, I have learned a lot about myself, on and off the course. Golf has taught me valuable lessons about fine-tuning techniques, building relationships, maintaining a positive mindset, and being a team player- but it has also built my confidence in myself.
Thank you and I am very excited to be connected with you soon!
