Personal Statement

I started golfing when I was 5 years old. I took some time off to try softball and returned to golf at age 10. During my first season playing in the PGA Junior Golf League at my local golf course, I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy Beers, PGA Professional. He was the Program Director for First Tee of Greater Akron at the time and invited me to participate in their programs. Through the First Tee, I gained essential golf skills as well as an appreciation of the rules of golf and more importantly, Life Skills reflective of the Nine Core Values. Being immersed in the First Tee, both as a player and a volunteer, at a young age influenced my love of the game, but also equipped me with the tools to overcome obstacles and the confidence that I can meet expectations set by myself and others.

One thing I enjoy about golf is it is both an individual or team sport. I can focus on myself throughout the winter with private lessons and the spring and summer by participating in Northern Ohio PGA Junior Series tournaments. In fall, I apply the skills I have developed to my varsity golf team with the goal of winning our conference championship and moving on to state. In 2020 I received the “Most Improved” player award by reducing my average score by 7 strokes. So far this season I have improved my score by 5 strokes.

Golf has taught me the discipline and importance of setting goals. I improved my GPA from 3.67 my freshman year to 3.73 my sophomore year. I took Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry my first two years in High School. I decided to challenge myself further and enrolled in the College Credit Plus program at Kent State University. It is an opportunity to complete my high school requirements and gain insight into college level learning.

Golf is not my only passion. I love all things art related. Art provides an opportunity to express my thoughts and ideas. I plan on pursuing a degree in Graphic Design/Visual Arts. I want to be able to help people communicate their thoughts and ideas into visual concepts through designing custom logos for companies or organizations, advertising layouts and brand creation.

I would like to attend a college or university that will offer me the opportunity to continue my education and allow me to grow through my love of golf and my passion for art.
