Personal Statement

My goal is to play golf at a school that will help me grow on and off the golf course. This past fall I had the opportunity to compete for Team Canada at an international competition in China (Aaron Baddeley Junior Golf Championship). I believe that my potential is truly untapped. In only my 4th year of playing golf, I play approximately 5 months out of the year outdoors due to weather conditions, compared to those with the luxury of playing all year round.  My willingness to improve my game is evident by the fact that I travelled 8 hours each way, every second week, for instruction with my coaches at the Magna Junior Golf Academy in Toronto last summer. I am currently a 4 letter athlete at school as well as an Honours student academically. Golf is my passion, but I also have competed at a high level on the Cross Country running, Hockey and Soccer teams. All of my teams have excelled and competed at Provincial “AA” championships. In fact our hockey team, with just 8 skaters, finished 4th in our Provincial championship this March. I thrive on being the go to person and a good team player, trying to set a good example for my younger teammates. The area of study I would like to pursue is physiotherapy. I know I can be an asset to any school and am eagerly looking forward to taking this next step in my life.

Training

  • Golf Fitness Training
  • 1 year
  • As part of the Magna Junior Golf Academy this season, I had access to trainers Kevin and Adam Honsberger who performed assessments, gave me programming to follow and monitored/evaluated me throughout my time with the coaches.
  • Golf Centred Fitness Training
  • 1 year
  • I worked with a local Personal Trainer, Chris Duguay, who operates Relentless Fitness for several months to develop a golf focused fitness program that I could do with my home gym set-up.
  • Performance Review from Taylor Made BioMechanical Analysis Centre
  • 1 year
  • Performance Initial Assessment March 2014 Taylor Made Lab 6 Iron Swing speed 65 mph Swing Path : 14 degrees inside /out Face Angle:6 degrees closed Up Path: 4 degrees up 6 Month Follow up /August 2014 Assessment 6 Iron Swing Speed: 70 MPH Swing Path: 5 Degrees inside/out Face angle: 6 degrees open Up Path: -3.4 degrees The data shows that Sydney’s swing speed increased and developed a small draw with a better angle of attack, resulting in longer consistent results. Our goal was to improve the impact position of the iron moving through the dirt and reduce the amount of face rotation, resulting in longer consistent ball striking. Driver March 2014 Swing Speed :72 MPH Swing Path: 9 degrees inside /out Face Angle : 6 Degrees closed Angle of Attack: 10 Degrees Up After/ August / 2014 Assessment DriverAugust 2014 Swing Speed : 81 MPH Swing Path : 1.8 Degrees inside /out Face Angle : 5.2 degrees open Angle of Attack: 0.8 Improvements : -swing speed 72/81 mph -face angles 6 closed/ 5.2 open -path 9 degrees inside out/ 1.8 degrees inside out -distance 10 degree up/ 0.8 degrees up The driver significantly improved increasing 9 miles per hour of club head speed , allowing for the ball to launch higher and create more distance. This proves that Sydney’s kinetic link is improving with her lower trunk and hip rotation supporting the improvements in her arm swing creating less curvature and better accuracy. There are swing analysis images available for the following that would not paste Sydney can make available from the hardcopy review: 1/ Face on impact position 2/Down the Line 3/ Face on top of swing Strength/ Biomechanics Review for Sydney Lia During our initial assessment of Sydney at the MATT centre our tests revealed that she had multiplebiomechanical imbalances. The most significant and the one and the most relevant one is that her pelvis was misaligned on the left. This misalignment in her pelvis created other imbalances in her body such as restrictions through her thoracic spine and shoulders. These restrictions inhibited her from being able to freely rotate throughout her swing, this forced her to compensate with her lower body, arms and hands to complete the swing. Sydney’s exercise program was designed to address these biomechanical issues as well as create functional strength to help her develop the strength that is required to have a smooth and powerful swing. Sydney was very diligent with doing her exercise program as well as monitoring her body and asking for the assistance she needed. This commitment to herself and making sure her body was in the best shape and bio mechanically sound allowed her to take full advantage of the coaching provided by Danny and David. I was impressed with Sydney’s work ethic and commitment to improving, it was clear that Sydney was putting in the necessary work because she improved almost weekly. For Sydney to continue to improve and reach the goals she has set for herself she needs to continue working hard and continue to be aware of her body and how it affects her swing.
