About me
My name is Julia Hunter and I currently live in West Kelowna, BC Canada. I am a junior attending Penticton Secondary school in Penticton, BC Canada. I am 5’3 and 140lbs and shoot Left. I currently play for the Okanagan Hockey Academy (Prep) program in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League (CSSHL). Last year I also played for Okanagan Hockey Academy in the Varsity division where our team was League and Playoff champions. Prior to joining OHA I played two years of Bantam AAA with the Kelowna Jr. Rockets and was part of a provincial championship winning team. I started playing hockey at a very young age, my dad built a hockey rink in our back yard every winter and bought me some skates when I was 5 years old, it was on the backyard rink where I found my love and passion for hockey that continues to this day.
Goals and aspirations
My goal is to play NCAA or CIS hockey, for the team that works best for my hockey development and educational needs, I want to play to my potential at the highest level possible. The fields of education I am interested in are Psychology, Criminology, and Sociology.
What makes you a good candidate for the team?
I am extremely competitive and hard working both on and off the ice. I am a versatile forward who can play all 3 forward positions. My primary position is center but often I am moved to either wing by the coach whenever the situation arises. I am a strong skater with a hard and accurate shot selection and take a lot of pride in my two-way game. My coaches and teammates trust me and I am often on the ice in stressful and important situations. I work a lot on what is needed to be done away from the puck by getting myself into good defending lanes and jumping into open areas during offensive situations.
What makes you different than other recruits in character, athletics, and academics?
Character – I am a person who takes pride in everything I do. I am very positive and supportive of others, I have great social skills and interact well with other players, coaches and managers. I like to give back where I can, during the offseason I work at youth hockey camps mentoring and teaching young players. I volunteer at the Grindstone award foundation and also started a shark conservation awareness fundraiser.
Athletically I come to practice prepared and focused and I am determined to become the best player I can be. I am a reliable teammate and eager to learn. I work hard on my off-ice fitness and take pride in being fit and ready to leave it all on the ice each and every time. I am very coachable and respect not only my teammates but the coaching staff and others involved with the team. I will sacrifice whatever is necessary for my team and teammates. I want to be part of a program that will develop me to be at the top of my game and reach my potential.
Academically I work hard in the classroom at my studies and understand that as a student-athlete, academics are the most important. Academics are key to the next steps in my life and will ultimately lead to my success as a future leader in my professional and personal life. I currently have a 3.4 GPA and strive to get better each and every day, it is important that I find the right fit as an athlete and student as I move towards college/university.
