I am currently in my senior year at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD as the only black female player and first female team captain on an all-boys team. I strive for excellence and want to compete in a college-level Ice Hockey program.
I've been playing Ice Hockey competitively for 7 years. For the last 3 years, I've been on the Tri-City Eagles travel team while simultaneously playing with the Rockets at Richard Montgomery High School for four years. This year I was recruited for the Maryland State Hockey League Girl’s Varsity team. Ice Hockey has been very demanding but exhilarating and empowering as a black woman. Last year, in my Junior year, I was named captain of my high school JV team and co-captain of the varsity team. As the only female on my JV team, it was challenging to gain the respect of all my teammates at first. My first promise to the team would be that I take them to the state championship. Their first reaction was disbelief and they told me "Lena we are not going to win." Or, “Lena we won't even make it past the first round." I knew then I had to be a model of focus, follow through, and display a winning mindset. This has probably been the most challenging but the most fulfilling and exciting hockey season I have ever experienced. I was able to lead my team through an undefeated season and enter the state championship. I’m also assistant captain for U19 girls travel team.
Due to the team’s success during my Junior year as captain, CBS sports contacted me and did an article on the team and me. Here is the article: Black teen hockey star paving the way for other girls on the ice
During this time I was also completing my first year in the Dual Enrollment Program through Montgomery County Community College. I was able to maintain a 3.6 average while playing for two teams. My second passion next to Ice Hockey is language. I have been learning Korean on my own as well as in one of my Dual Enrollment classes.
I am excited to continue my pursuit of Ice Hockey at the college level.
