Personal Statement
Hi, I am Ava from Auckland, New Zealand. I am excited about the opportunity to play lacrosse within the US College System and feel I have much to contribute. I started playing lacrosse at High School 4 years ago and have taken every chance to play the game since then. I have travelled with Auckland U15 and U18 representative teams to Perth, Australia, with the New Zealand U20’s squad to Melbourne, Australia, and most recently in August this year, I represented New Zealand at the U20 World Champs in Hong Kong, as one of the youngest players aged 16 years. Competing in this tournament against the best U20 lacrosse athletes in the world allowed me to showcase my skills and learn what areas of the game I need to develop further in, something I am now putting in place with my coaches back in New Zealand.
I love playing this fast, dynamic sport. It allows me to use my speed built up from many years as a runner, agility from all my youth sports, and the skills I have learnt as part of my representative and NZ squad training. I believe I can make a real impact in a team sport that requires constant communication, adaptability and fitness. My most played, and favourite, position is midfield. I am known for my coachability as I love to improve and learn. This has been recognised through my receiving of the NZ U20 "Extra Award" on multiple occasions, for attitude towards training and going the extra mile. As Lacrosse Captain of my High School team this year I have enjoyed building up my leadership skills both on and off the field. I was also awarded the Epsom Girls Grammar School Lacrosse Cup for MVP at the end of year Sports Awards, in addition to Lacrosse colours and a Scholarship for Leadership, perfomance and dedication to Lacrosse. I was also awarded the Senior Cross Country Cup for the top performances throughout the 2024 cross country season. I feel that all these skills make me a strong candidate for a US College lacrosse team.
My love of sport and the science behind it means I am looking to study Sports Science at University. My academic achievements across a variety of subjects will allow me to do this and I am committed to continue to achieve a high GPA. I will finish high school in New Zealand at the end November 2025 and am looking to start at college in the US fall, September 2026.
